Keep San Antonio Beautiful: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Keep San Antonio Beautiful is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower the citizens of San Antonio to take responsibility for improving their community’s environments. No one wants to see their city left to waste, and with new efforts and programs San Antonio is positioning itself to become more environmentally friendly and beautiful to live in. Keep San Antonio Beautiful uses the phrase “reduce, reuse and recycle” when addressing waste minimization. San Antonio, the nation, and the world as a whole, have been moved to think about what we discard every day in an attempt to minimize the footprint we leave on the earth.
Recycling is a great way to change your footprint in your community. Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources. Collecting used bottles, cans, and newspapers and taking them to the curb or to a collection facility is just the first in a series of steps that generates a host of financial, environmental, and social returns. Although these steps require a small change in lifestyle and the way you think about the things you throw away, the change is not big, and the rewards will benefit San Antonio and the environment.
Keep San Antonio Beautiful encourages the formation of public and private coalitions or partnerships in communities to maximize the impact of quality recycling practices. They encourage your company or organization to take initiative and volunteer your time to keep your city beautiful. Programs offered include Adopt-A-Spot Litter Control, which offers individuals, groups, schools and businesses the opportunity to select an area of town and assume responsibility for cleaning it four times a year. A second is The Green Team Challenge - a competition, sponsored by The Real Estate Council, Keep San Antonio Beautiful, and the city of San Antonio, targeting elementary and middle schools and encouraging students to improve their campus and surrounding neighborhood area through clean-up activities and increased environmental awareness. The competition provides an opportunity for students to take ownership in their schools, gain community pride and win cash prizes to continue their clean-up and beautification efforts.
